The ZUS pension, explained
The Polish pension is not a fraction of anything and not a multiple of years served. It is a quotient: everything recorded on your ZUS account, divided by the average further life expectancy for your age in the month you retire. This page describes both sides of that division — what goes into the numerator and where the denominator comes from — with the legal basis beside each claim.

A quotient, not a fraction
The pension is the amount obtained by dividing the calculation base by the average further life expectancy for a person of the age at which this insured person retires. Nothing in that arithmetic is a percentage of service or a share of any reference amount.
Legal basis: art. 26 ust. 1, ustawa z dnia 17 grudnia 1998 r. o emeryturach i rentach z FUS
What goes into the numerator
The calculation base is made of three separately governed things.
- Pension contributions recorded on the ZUS account, as revalued.
- The revalued kapitał początkowy — the value assigned to periods before 1 January 1999.
- The amounts recorded on the sub-account.
The pension contribution itself is 19,52% of the contribution base, and it is split between the account and the sub-account:
- ZUS account — 12,22%
- subkonto, for a member of an open pension fund — 4,38%
- open pension fund (OFE) — 2,92%
- subkonto, for everybody else — 7,3%
The last two rows are two shapes of one rule rather than two addends: a member of an open pension fund has the amount split between the fund and the sub-account, and everybody else has all of it recorded on the sub-account. Either way the same share stays on the ZUS account.
Legal basis: art. 25 ust. 1 and art. 173 ust. 2, ustawa z dnia 17 grudnia 1998 r. o emeryturach i rentach z FUS; art. 22 ust. 1 pkt 1 and ust. 3, ustawa z dnia 13 października 1998 r. o systemie ubezpieczeń społecznych
Where the denominator comes from
The Prezes Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego announces the table each year, in the form of a komunikat in the Dziennik Urzędowy „Monitor Polski”, by 31 March.
The age is taken in completed years AND months, so the published table has a column for each month above the full year and a lookup by whole years alone is wrong for eleven twelfths of claimants. One table serves both sexes: the Act requires it to be determined jointly for men and women, and it is expressed in months.
| Age | Months above the full year | Further life expectancy |
|---|---|---|
| 60 years | 0 months | 268,9 months |
| 60 years | 6 months | 264,2 months |
| 65 years | 0 months | 222,7 months |
| 65 years | 6 months | 218,4 months |
A slice of the table, not the table: the announcement covers ages from 30 upwards across twelve month columns. For an age outside this slice, this page states no figure.

A rule that can only help
Where it is more favourable to the insured person, the life tables in force on the day they reached the pension age are used instead of the current ones.
In other words: working past the pension age cannot cost you because the table grew longer in the meantime.
Legal basis: art. 26 ust. 6, ustawa z dnia 17 grudnia 1998 r. o emeryturach i rentach z FUS
When it is payable
The pension age is 60 years for women and 65 years for men. More on the pension age · on the amount and the minimum pension

The cap is on the contribution, not on the pension
No provision caps the pension. What Poland caps is an INPUT: the annual base on which the emerytalna contribution is charged may not exceed thirty times the forecast average monthly wage, and above it no contribution is taken. That limits how fast an account can grow in one year; it puts no ceiling on the balance, on the number of years, or on the resulting pension.
For the year the announcement covers, that limit is 282 600,00 zł — 30 times the forecast average monthly wage, taken at 9420,00 zł.
